“You can look at a picture for a week and never think of it again. You can also look at a picture for a second and think of it all your life.” ~ Joan Miro.

Two decades ago, in 1997, a small photography course emerged along the sunny shoreline of Karachi. Over the years, this course at IVS [Indus Valley school of Art and Architecture], flourished and transgressed into a minor. In 2020, all the hard work and dedication put into this course will culminate in photography being offered as a major.

This page celebrates the creative minds of IVS students and their inspirational journey through a visual spin of analogue and digital, comprising of current and archival works.

“To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.” ~ Elliott Erwitt.

The most important things are also among the most difficult, have confidence in your vision; find the patience to let your vision define itself over time. Pay attention, make pictures often. You’ll see :)

Ever semester it’s about the students and every year’s end, one reflects and remembers how they make it all worthwhile, to be a teacher, as the new year (2020) begins it marks the beginning of 20 years of a photography minor being taught at IVS. Happy to report I have no regrets.
